About this Enrichment Option

The Sustainability Enrichment Option at Champlain Lennoxville is open to students in any program of study. You – yes, you, the student reading this! – you want to make a difference.  You know that the challenge is enormous: pollution, climate change, ignorance and indifference.  You know that facing that challenge requires all the knowledge, understanding, and skill you can find – and more: it requires building connections across cultures, classes, and communities, working with others to get it done.  This is a path for you: a way for you to learn, to identify and analyze problems right around us and break them apart, to figure out what needs to happen and then to try to make it so.

To complete the Enrichment Option, you will need to do three things:

  1. Make robust connections between the academic content of at least two of your courses (explore your options with the Enrichment Option Coordinator: every type of course is potentially eligible), one each in two semesters, and environmental or sustainable development issues.
  2. Individually or in a group, identify a significant sustainability challenge in our immediate surroundings and, over a period of weeks or months, develop a detailed plan to address it.
  3. Put that plan into action, and once you have done so look back and see what you need to take with you from this experience as you go on to your next steps.

Starting Out

When you choose to embark on this path, the Coordinator will guide you regarding how to connect your course(s) to environmental issues through a series of meetings:

  1. One in the first four weeks of the semester to identify which courses might be suitable;
  2. One or, if necessary, several more meetings over the course of the semester to find ways to connect your work (assignments, labs, and/or other learning activities) for the courses with environmental or sustainable development issues; and
  3. A meeting at the end of the semester to review the connections you made and produce a short summary of how they will be useful for your project.

Take Flight

From here, you have two options, the Individual Project Stream and the Community Work Stream.  Whichever one you choose, you will undertake to plan and put into action a Sustainability-related project and, finally, produce a short report outlining your goals, what you achieved, and what you need to take with you from this experience to continue confronting sustainability challenges.
