There are many awards that are offered by external companies and organizations... here are just a few of them that have been offered in the past, listed in order of application deadlines.
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS: The candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident intending to begin university study in September 2010. It is not necessary that the student intend to apply for admission to the U. of T. Each school is invited to choose a student who demonstrates superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional achievement in a broad context. The student will not only excel in academic pursuits but also have an enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and an involvement in the life of their school and community. Deadline for nomination is October 5, 2009.
THE FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ABORIGINAL YOUTH offers 85 scholarships of $2000-$4000 to aboriginal students who are Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a college, university, or technical institute. The deadline for receipt of applications is October 12.
THE CANADIAN MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION (LORAN AWARD) will present cash awards to students who will be attending various Canadian universities in Fall, 2010. Awards vary from $2,000 a year to paid tuition for 4 years plus $8,000/year. The student must be graduating this year with a cumulative average of 85% and be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. Character, service and leadership are the selection criteria for Loran Awards. Students may apply directly, or be sponsored by their Cégep (maximum 4 students). To be nominated by the College, we must receive the applications no later than September 30. Direct applications must be received by the Foundation by October 27. NB: The nominated student(s) will not necessarily receive this award, since all nominated students will be independently reviewed by the Foundation.
TD CANADA TRUST SCHOLARSHIP for COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM is open to students across Canada who: Are in their final year of high shool in Canada (or CEGEP in Quebec); Have shown exceptional initiative in making a meaningful and lasting difference in their community; Possess the academic skills to successfully enter and complete college or university and present a minimum average of 75%. Each scholarship is valued at up to $70,000 and includes full tuition at any approved university or college in Canada; $7,500 a year toward living expenses; and an offer of summer employment. WENDY'S CLASSIC ACHIEVER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is focused on rewarding and acknowledging students who have demonstrated a solid academic standing, as well as a commitment to extracurricular activities and community service. Students can compete for scholarships up to $5,000, a trip to New York for the 2 national winners, a chance to win a $1000 grant for their school, and a chance to get a reward if they apply early. Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents in their final graduating year of a Quebec CEGEP for the 2009/2010 school year, with the intent to enter university in the next academic year. Students must have achieved at least a 70% grade average in their previous year, have participated in at least one extracurricular activity and demonstrated involvement in their community (i.e. volunteer work). BOURSES JEUNESSE RAYMOND-BLAIS is a program for 18-30 year olds who wish to take a technical or refresher course, take non-uniiversity courses, acquire instructional or professional equipment, carry out a personal project particularly with a view to acquiring new skills, or acquire international experience that provides benefits to Canada. 100 bursaries of $500 will be awarded. Apply on line at www.desjardins.com/fondation by November 10, 2009. Select Bursaries for 18-30 year-olds.
SENATE PAGE PROGRAM: If you will be a full-time student pursuing university in the Nation's Capital Regional and are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and are able to communicate orally in both official languages, you may be eligible to work as a Senate Page. Information and application forms are available at www.senate-senat.ca/pages.asp. Deadline to apply is November 28.
HOUSE OF COMMONS PAGE PROGRAM: Are you a good student and do you plan to attend university in the Ottawa region next fall? Are you a leader now and in the future and committed to service, to others and society? This lucrative and prestigious position may be for you. SHAD VALLEY is looking for: creative and entrepreneurial minds; initiative and drive; excellent communications skills; leadership abilities and the ability to work within a team; high academic success, especially in math and the sciences. Shad offers students a summer of: opportunity, challenge, and adventure. This residential program at a host university campus runs every July and encourages students to open their minds and explore new career opportunities. ROCK OR A HARD PLACE: Follow the financial fortunes of 4 friends who have to pay their own way after high school, play the game and take the quiz and get a chance to win one of five $1,000 scholarships. THE NEADS EQUITY THROUGH EDUCATION AWARD is being offered to encourage full access to post-secondary education for persons with disabilities. Awards will be granted to outstanding applicants who meet the criteria of the program. The deadline to apply is December 17, 2009 and details are available at http://www.neads.ca/.
RACISM. STOP IT! NATIONAL VIDEO COMPETITION: This competition invites youth to go beyond the boundaries of race, ethnicity and religion, and to embrace diversity. If you are between 12 and 20 years of age, you are eligible to compete. Create a video 45 to 60 seconds long sharing your thoughts on eliminating racism. Work alone or in a team. For information go to www.march21.gc.ca . The deadline is January 16.
THE ASSOCIATION QUEBECOISE DES ETUDIANTS AYANT DES INCAPACITES AU POSTSECONDAIRE (AQEIPS) continues its bursary program to encourage and stimulate the pursuit of postsecondary education for persons with disabilities. The AQEIPS seeks to pursue two main objectives: encourage students with disabilities to advocate for their rights and support their social participation; help students with disabilities face additional costs related to their functional limitations. Deadline to apply is January 28.
MENSA CANADA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME: By writing your career plan and describing the means you undertake to achieve your goals you may earn a scholarship of $750 or $1000. You must be a full time student and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and be at least 18 years old by the application deadline, January 31. You must write an essay in English or French describing your career goals in 250 words or less. Rules can be found at http://www.mensacanada.ca/.
THE FONDATION DES COMPTABLES AGRÉÉS DU QUÉBEC will grant 40 awards of $500 throughout the province to students who have completed one year in science, social science, or Accounting and Management Technology (or any program leading to university studies in administration or accounting) and have met the criteria established by the Foundation's selection committee. Information is available at www.ocaq.qc.ca/fondation. Deadline to apply is January 29.
TERRY FOX HUMANITARIAN AWARD PROGRAM: This program is intended to encourage Canadian youth to seek the high ideals represented by Terry Fox by the granting of commemorative awards for the pursuit of higher education. The value of each of the 20 awards is up to $7,0000 annually, for a maximum of four years, or until a first degree is obtained. Demonstration of the highest ideals and qualities of citizenship will be criteria for the selection and renewal of recipients. Further relevant qualities are courage in overcoming obstacles, involvement in humanitarian service and participation in sport, fitness and community service. Application materials and information is available at http://www.terryfox.org/ and application forms must be post-marked by February 1 of each year.
KIN CANADA BURSARIES: Through this fund, assistance is available to applicants in their quest for higher learning. The Fund awards $1000 bursaries to successful applicants. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and currently registered full-time at a post-secondary institution. Application forms must be submitted to the Kinsmen Club nearest your permanent residence by February 1. Go to http://www.bursary.ca/ to print an application form.
THE NATIONAL BANK OF CANADA is proud to announce its 20th annual Bursary and Summer Employment Program for University and Cegep Students with Physical or Sensory Disabilities. Under this Program, the Bank awards two $2,000 bursaries together with a paid 12-week summer job for university students and one $1,000 bursary together with a paid 10-week summer job for Cegep students. Students are encouraged to apply online at www.nbc.ca/bursaries. Deadline is February 5.
CHAPEAU LES FILLES! HATS OFF TO YOU! This competition helps women become familiar with the many career options open to them and provides support for those training for male-dominated trades and occupations until graduation. BOURSTAD is a stock market simulation on the internet open to high school, Cégep and University students. It runs from February 11 to April 11 and you can register online at http://www.bourstad.ca/. There are almost $25,000 in prizes to be won!
LOTO QUEBEC BURSARIES AND STAGES: Loto Quebec offers 12 bursaries to post-secondary students with a physical or sensory disability who have completed a paid internship. This is open to students in Administration, Economics, Computer Sciences, Marketing, etc. Application forms are available at http://www.lotoquebec.com/ and the deadline to apply is February 14.
BECOME A PART-TIME LANGUAGE ASSISTANT: ACCENT is a part-time work experience available to postsecondary students who are studying at an institution outside their home province. You will lead classroom activities with Canadian students, 8 hours per week between Sept. 1 and April 30, and will be paid $520 per month. Information is available in C133 or at http://www.myaccent.ca/. Deadline to apply is February 15.
BECOME A FULL-TIME LANGUAGE ASSISTANT: As part of ODYSSEY, you will have the opportunity to lead language activities in a classroom to support the teacher. From September through May 31 you'll work 25 hours a week helping young people learn your language and culture. You will receive $18,500 for your nine month mandate. THE MATHIEU DA COSTA CHALLENGE is open to citizens of Canada from 9-18. Participants submit an original piece of writing (English or French) or artwork (including computer genererated) that illustrates how specific individuals from Canada's Aboriginal, African and other backgrounds have contributed to the development of Canada. TOYOTA EARTH DAY SCHOLARSHIP: Twenty students from across Canada will be granted awards of $5000 to be applied towards educational expenses for the first year of post-secondary studies. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents (landed immigrants) and have demonstrated outstanding environmental commitment, community service and leadership during the course of their studies, while maintaing a high level of academic achievement. EXPLORE another region of Canada while learning English or French during a five week Spring/Summer program. Participants receive a $2,000 bursary covering tuition fees, materials, meals and accommodation. (Travel costs to location and pocket money are not included.) HEC LEADERSHIP BURSARY: HEC offers approximately 100 Leadership Scholarships (one for Champlain-Lennoxville). Students must have a code R between 30.0 and 32.999 and be active in the community, student life, sports, arts and culture or entrepreneurship. Applications are available from C. Matthew in C133 and the deadline to apply is March 15 for the fall semester and November 1 for the winter semester. Entrance scholarships are automatically given to students with a code R higher than 33.0 - no application is required.
LA FONDATION DE L'UNIVERSITÉ DU QUÉBEC offers various bursaries to students continuing their education in a francophone university in Quebec. In 2006-2007 they will grant a total of approximately $100,000 to deserving candidates. The description of the various bursaries, including the target clientel, the deadline (February 15 or March 15), the branch of studies and amount of the award can be found at www.uquebec.ca/fondation "Programme de bourses".
CMA BURSARY: To be eligible for a CEGEP scholarship of $500, students must be registered in a CEGEP program and eligible for a university program in accounting sciences or business administration. Applications must be submitted directly to the Order by March 15, 2010. THE MILLER THOMSON FOUNDATION NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME: The purpose of this foundation is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher education goals for individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through extracurricular activities and have made significant contributions of time and energy to community service programs. Students in their last year of Cegep who will be attending a Canadian University are eligible to apply. Each year approximately 200 awards of $1000 are presented across Canada. THE QUEBEC ENTREPRENEURSHIP CONTEST encourages students to participate in Quebec's largest annual competition to promote entrepreneurship. It consists of academic or extracurricular entrepreneurship projects developed and carried out by students over the last school year (June 2007-June 2008) that enable them to develop their entrepreneurial skills. TALK ABOUT CANADA SCHOLARSHIP QUIZ: This quiz gives students the opportunity to learn about outstanding Canadians, while at the same time allowing them the chance to win scholarhsip money for post-secondary education. The online quiz runs from Jan. 19 - March 23, and anyone who correctly answers the multiple-choice questions stands a chance of winning one of sixty scholarships totalling $45,000. THE GARFIELD WESTON MERIT UPPER YEAR SCHOLARSHIP: Are you active in your community? Do you want to make a real difference? This is your scholarship. There are approximately 25 awards, ranging from $4,000 to over $8,000 (renewable). The minimum average to be considered is 73% and candidates should be passionate about their chosen field of study, willing to try new things, care about community and are committed to making a difference to society. Students must have at least one academic year of studies remaining to complete their technical program to be eligible - pre-university programs are not eligible. Two candidates are nominated from applications submitted to Champlain College (internal deadline is March 22) and the nominated students are then evaluated by the Weston Foundation. 2010 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ATHLETES PROGRAM: This program is a unique initiative to highlight the excellence of young Quebec athletes and enable those who stand out - either in their sport or through their acacdemic achievements - to benefit from one of three scholarships, valued at $1,000, $2,500 and $10,000 and to be recognized publicly in a weekly news feature. Applications and information is available at www.lejournaldemontreal.com/jeunesathletes or www.lejournaldequebec.com/jeunesathletes and the application period ends on March 31, 2010.
LA FONDATION DESJARDINS offers 150 bursaries of $1250 to students beginning university next fall. Deadline is March 1. Go to the site www.desjardins.com/fondation and select Bourses de baccalauréat. There are two awards of $5000 for actuarial studies - select Bourses Relève Desjardins. Deadline is March 1. There are 3 bursaries of $2500 for women returning to studies - select Bourses Dorimène. TOWNSHIPPERS' ASSOCIATION LEADERS OF TOMORROW AWARDS offers three $1000 prizes to young leaders between the ages of 15 and 35. The nomination period is open until 9:00 a.m. on April 3. Information and a nomination form are available at http://www.townshippers.qc.ca/Y-tofta.aspx
MONSANTO OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM will provide 50 scholarships to students across the country entering their first year in agricultural sciences or forestry. Each scholarship is valued at $1500 and students must be from an agricultural or forestry family farming operation and have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership capabilities and active involvement in their local community. MAKING OUR WAY has been launched by Quebec Youth Action. The goal of the contest is to value, encourage and recognize the civic involvement of young people within their communities. Through volunteering, young adults from across the province act as role models by demonstrating their sense of responsibility, their creativity, and their willingness to help others. The winners will receive an exploratory stay in France lasting approximately one week in October during which they will meet with young French people who are also involed in their community. BOURSES D'ÉTUDES EN ÉNERGIE offers one monetary award at the collegial, university and graduate level from $1,500 to $5,000. To apply you must be a Canadian or permanent resident who has lived in Quebec for at least one year and registerd in a College or University in 2007-2008 with an interest in energy in the form of engineering, economics, urbanism, design or architecture. You must be present at the awards ceremony on November 13, 2008. You must be outstanding in your studies and stand out amongst your peers. MADD (MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING) - MADD awards a $2,000 bursary to Canadian students enrolled full-time in a Canadian college or cégep and who have lost a parent or guardian in an impaired-driving related crash. Application forms are available at www.madd.ca/english/youth/bursary_appln.pdf. Deadline to apply is May 31.
LE FESTIVAL VIDÉ EAU is an international competition for video clips organized by the International Secretariat for Water in preparation for the International "Water and Film" events that will take place in Istanbul in 2009. The festival invites people aged from 17 to 30 to submit 90 second or shorter video clips on the theme "Water, People and Sustainable Development" by midnight June 15. ROTARY CLUB OF THE BOUNDARY SEEKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS. Each year the Rotary International Foundation sponsors one of the largest international scholarship programs in the world. Each scholarship is for approximately $30,000. Scholars study in a country other than their home country, where in addition to their studies they serve as unofficial ambassadors of goodwill. The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships Program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographic areas. Scholars are encouraged to consider studying in countries that host relatively few scholars, such as Japan, Korea, Scandinavia and the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and South America. All Ambassadorial Scholarship applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college or a secondary school education with employment in a recognized vocation for at least two years. CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL ASSISTANCE FUND offers an Education Assistance Loan Program to assist serving and former members and their dependants with costs of FULL-TIME post-secondary education. The program consists of low interest loans up to a maximum of $16,000 lifetime per student. Details and forms are available at http://sisip.com/en/Downloads_e/ealp_e.asp. For those wishing to obtain a loan for the fall semester, applications should be submitted by June 30. Applications are accepted throughout the year until allotted funds are exhausted.
THE ELIZABETH GREENSHIELDS FOUNDATION assists artists in the early stages of their careers. Awards are limited to candidates working in painting, drawing, printmaking or sculpture who demonstrate a commitment to making art a lifetime career. Grants are in the amount of $12,500 and may be used for any art-related purpose. The award is granted quarterly, and students may obtain additional information from C. Matthew in C133. |
